After continuing North we ended up at an RV park in Fort Fraser. We find these places gross and against our big wilderness theme, but after 2 cold lake showers we were ready to pay the big bucks. And sometimes having wifi to update a notoriously non-updated blog is helpful. We left this place feeling nice and clean and headed for Houston, BC to see the biggest FLY FISHING ROD IN THE WORLD! WHOA!
The next step toward getting to Alaska was getting on the CASSIAR HIGHWAY. AND it was our time. Baby steps. Almost there…
We saw a sign for a place called Jigsaw Lake and decided to check it out. We headed down a forest road and made a wrong turn at the small junction. We ended up driving to the top of a mountain and caught a gorgeous view. Quite a lucky mistake. We took some nice pictures and headed down to find the real Jigsaw Lake.
We have been following Milepost quite religiously, as it tells us exactly how to get to Alaska. It described Jigsaw as a small rustic site along the water with 4 spots. Free. Bingo.
We arrived to find a man sitting alone next to a canoe by the water. Jack. Jack was an interesting guy. He was tall, lanky, recently retired from the sawmill, and excited about his new canoe. It took a minute to realize he had a lazy eye, as he was a little stumbly and his whole body was going in all directions. He offered up his one person canoe to us and joked about seeing how that would work. We liked Jack. He was adventurous.
We took in the great views that night as the sky was making beautiful reflections on the water. We loved Jigsaw Lake and decided a minimum stay of two nights was a must.
The next morning Jack had left to go canoeing at a nearby lake. So after breakfast we decided it was time I learned to ride a dirt bike. Adam gave me a very detailed lesson, a demonstration, and lots of help, and I killed it, killed it, and then finally KILLLLLLLLLLLLED IT, as I cruised the lot. First gear all the way, oh yeah.
All that hard work called for a swim in the clear lake. There was a log going straight into the water that made a perfect jumping point for some dive frisbee. It was so fun until I caught a leech on my leg. Then that was enough of that.
We hung out at Jigsaw for two days, dirt biking, swimming, taking out the Bird Hawk, fishing, and finally just hanging out. It was wonderful. Before we left, Jack came back. We caught up on his canoe trip and then he was off again! I wouldn’t be surprised if we ran into Jack again. He was quite the guy.
